Athletics

With more than 140 athletes and unified partners from all over Charles County participating in this program, athletics is by far the most popular sport. Athletics events combine both running and field components.

Special Olympics Athletics events range from 100 Meter dash to the 400M walk, and from the softball throw to running long jump, and relays. For athletes with lower ability levels there are walking events and throwing events. For those with physical impairments, wheelchair and assisted mobility events are offered.

Our Unified SportsŪ program holds a program called the Run, Jump, and Throw competition. Teams of 2 athletes and 2 partners compete in three individual events (100 M Dash, shot put or softball throw, running or standing long jump) and a 4x100 M relay. Each team members score/time is converted into points. The team with the highest point total is awarded the gold medal.

Athletics are contested at the Special Olympics Maryland Summer Games at the University of Maryland, College Park. Check out the Calendar for this years dates.

Our biggest sporting event in Charles County is the Annual Spring Games, held the first Saturday in May. Over 130 athletes and Unified Partners will participate in this event which will qualify them to continue on to Summer Games. Check out the Calendar for times and location.
